TAS:Change strip-search laws: commissioner

Tasmania's commissioner for children AILEEN ASHFORD is demanding an urgent overhaul
of the state's laws governing strip-searches on children.

Ms ASHFORD was responding to a strip-search on a 12-year-old girl twice in Hobart last week.

She's called for legislation that would mean a court order would be needed to strip-search
anyone under the age of 18.

Ms ASHFORD says the state's laws don't differentiate between adults and children regarding
searches.

The incident has been widely condemned in Tasmania, despite a police review finding
the two female officers who conducted the search acted lawfully and appropriately.
