NSW: National Easter Road Toll at 6
SYDNEY, April 18 AAP - Six people have died so far on Australian roads during thisyear's Easter holiday period.
Queensland today recorded its first road death this Easter with a fatal accident westof Brisbane overnight.
Police said an 80-year-old woman lost control of her car which overturned on Old RosemontRd at Peranga, about 230km west of Brisbane, about 7pm (AEST).
Police were not notified of the accident until about 9pm (AEST) and when they wentto the scene found blood in the car but no occupant.
A search was held until 3am (AEST) using a rescue helicopter and sniffer dogs but failedto find any trace of an occupant.
The search was due to resume at 6.30am (AEST) but was called off after a farmer foundthe body of an 80-year-old woman, believed to have been the driver, in a dam about 6am(AEST).
Police believe the woman may have staggered from the car and was attempting to find help.
The Easter road toll in Western Australia stands at four.
An elderly man and woman were killed yesterday afternoon when their car collided withanother vehicle at a suburban intersection in Perth.
And two men died at 7.30am yesterday when the car they were travelling in rolled overon the Great Northern Highway 1.5km north of Paynes Find near Mt Magnet, 570km north-eastof Perth.
In Victoria an elderly man was killed when his car collided with a truck in Gippsland,eastern Victoria, yesterday afternoon.
No road deaths have been recorded in the other states during this year's Easter holiday period.
Police say the 11-day Operation Tortoise in NSW has had a promising start.
Commander Traffic Services, John Hartley, said he was pleased with the campaign sofar, but was dismayed some motorists had been caught drink-driving.
