TAS: Complaint changed against former Anglican priest
HOBART, Aug 29 AAP - Child sex charges against a former Anglican priest were alteredtoday in a Tasmanian court.
Police prosecutor Steve Driver told Hobart Magistrates Court the original complaintagainst Garth Stephen Hawkins, 58, had been altered to take into account "changes in legislationover time"
A total of 24 charges were withdrawn, including 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of indecentassault and two of aggravated sexual assault. All related to minors.
The new charges laid today include four counts of indecent assault, two counts of havingcarnal knowledge with a person against the order of nature, two counts of sexual intercoursewith a young person under the age of 17 and three counts of maintaining a sexual relationshipwith a young person.
The charges relate to alleged incidents at Triabunna, on the state's east coast, Devonport,in the north-west, and Hamilton, in the south, between 1974 and 1984.
Hawkins is also facing two counts of raping an 18-year-old man at Triabunna in 1982.
Defence counsel Roger Baker said some aspects of the original complaint had been misconceivedand he was unable to proceed with a bail application for a "variety of reasons".
Hawkins was remanded in custody to reappear via video link for plea on September 18.
