Home (MELBOURNE)
Three children and a man have been found dead in a home in Melbourne's far northern
suburbs .. in a suspected murder-suicide.
Police say the bodies were found in the home in Johnson Court at Roxburgh Park just
before two o'clock this afternoon.
It's reported the three children were all under the age of 12.
Cyclist (SYDNEY)
Driver fatigue may have caused a truck driver to veer into the breakdown lane and mow
down a group of cyclists .. killing one .. on the M4 in Sydney's west this morning.
Police say a group of four cyclists were struck by a B-double truck at about 7.40am (AEST).
A male cyclist died at the scene and the other three sustained serious injuries.
A WorkCover spokesman says they're conducting a preliminary investigation of the incident
to ascertain whether it was caused by driver fatigue.
Toll NSW (SYDNEY)
A man's died and another's been seriously injured in a car collision in northern NSW.
Police say it happened around 12.30 (AEDT) this afternoon .. when a northern bound
car collided with a southern bound car on the New England Highway .. about 25 km south
of Tamworth.
A person travelling in one of the cars is believed to have died in the accident ..
while the driver and only occupant of a second car suffered serious injuries.
US Mine (WASHINGTON)
Four US miners missing after a deadly blast at a coal mine in WEst Virginia have been
found dead .. following a nearly week-long search for survivors.
The grim discovery at the Upper Big Branch Mine brings the death toll from Monday's
explosion to 29 .. making it the worst coal mine accident in the US since 1984.
President BARACK OBAMA has asked officials to report back next week on the tragedy
in order to take the steps necessary to prevent such accidents in the future.
Bridge (BRISBANE)
A Brisbane shipping pilot has averted a potential disaster .. by bringing an out of
control cruise liner to a complete stop .. before it passed under the Gateway Bridge.
Brisbane Marine Pilots captain PETER LILEY says he was at the helm of the 245 metre
long Pacific Dawn this morning when it lost power and all steering .. just 700 metres
before it was to pass under the Gateway Bridge.
He says two tugboats had to bring the Pacific Dawn under control .. and it was brought
to a standstill 70 metres shy of the six-lane bridge.
Cyberbully (MELBOURNE)
New research shows one in 10 Australian teenagers are cyberbullied at least every few
weeks .. involving nasty messages .. or photos posted online or sent on mobile phones.
However most of those being cyberbullied are also being bullied face-to-face .. according
to the research from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.
Professor DONNA CROSS has told the National Centre Against Bullying Conference in Melbourne
today that strategies to tackle cyberbullying can't be isolated .. and must address other
forms of bullying.
She says her team has started a three-year trial of ways to prevent and deal with cyberbullying
.. which it's hoped will provide schools with proven solutions.
PollTas (HOBART)
Tasmanian Premier DAVID BARTLETT and Greens leader NICK MCKIM have gone on a two-hour
bike ride together .. as Labor prepares to form a minority government.
Governor PETER UNDERWOOD decided this week that Labor should retain government following
the split result from last month's election.
The Greens decided on Thursday to back a minority Labor government.
Mr BARTLETT says the pair spent this morning's mountain bike ride up Mount Wellington
discussing the future .. but has stressed no deals were made.
Weather Vic (MELBOURNE)
Melbourne's record-breaking run of 20 degree days could be close to an end .. as a
cold front tracks eastwards across the state.
The city's topped 20 degrees for 123 days straight .. the longest stretch of its kind
since such temperature readings began over 150 years ago.
The summer heat record began on December 9 .. and has continued to smash the previous
record stretch of 78 days set in 2001.
But the approaching cold front could plunge temperatures below the 20 degree threshold
.. with tomorrow's forecast predicting a high of 19.
Randwick Scene (SYDNEY)
Celebrities have partied at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse for Derby Day.
Test Cricketer MICHAEL CLARKE .. actor MATHEW NEWTON and his American actress girlfriend
RACHEL TAYLOR and the late businessman RICHARD PRATT's mistress SHARI-LEA HITCHCOCK were
among the guests at the Emirates marquee which has brought a little bit of India to the
racetrack.

At least 11 people are dead and 18 injured after a bus plunged into the sea in Venezuela.
Speeding (SYDNEY)
The NSW opposition says hoons should have their cars taken away and crushed .. instead
of the government's plan to only confiscate speeding drivers' licence plates.

AFL Saints (MELBOURNE)
St Kilda skipper NICK RIEWOLDT will be missing from the side for two months or longer
after scans today revealed he suffered a serious hamstring injury.
The star forward has a high grade muscle tendon injury to his right hamstring, which
happened as he leapt for a mark during the Saints' win over Collingwood at Etihad Stadium
last night.
St Kilda would not say when RIEWOLDT was expected to return as they will now seek further
specialist opinion on his condition.
AFL Port (ADELAIDE)
Port Adelaide have lost senior ruckman DEAN BROGAN to a shoulder problem ahead of this
afternoon's AFL match against Brisbane at AAMI Stadium.
His place has been taken by the former Carlton tall CAMERON CLOKE, who was elevated
off the rookie list during the week.
Derby (SYDNEY)
Queensland gelding Shoot Out has maintained his perfect record at Randwick and has
given trainer JOHN WALLACE his first Group One win in almost 30 years with a gritty victory
in the 1.3 million dollar AJC Australian Derby.
League Warriors (WELLINGTON)
The New Zealand Warriors have signed second-rower LEWIS BROWN for two more NRL seasons
.. keeping the 23-year-old at the club until at least the end of 2012.
BROWN broke into first grade as a backrower last season after arriving at the Warriors
as a hooker .. scoring three tries in 15 games and earning himself a call-up to the Kiwis'
train-on squad for last year's Four Nations tournament.
